Call for Applications for Research Sponsorship

The Panel on Gamma and Electron Irradiation is calling for applications for sponsorship of research in fields utilizing or advancing the application of radiation processing using electron beam, X-ray or gamma radiation. Funding up to a maximum of £10,000 per research project is available from the Panel, subject to successful negotiation of terms and conditions and Members’ final approval.

Applicants should submit a proposal setting-out background to the research, any previous findings, the primary objective(s), final deliverables and the relevance to Panel activities as indicated by the Publications on the Panel website. If other collaborative parties are to be involved they should be identified with a description of their involvement.

Applicants should indicate the total amount of funding that is being sought and what proportion from the Panel and the use to which the funding will be allocated (equipment, consumables, registration fees, subsistence, overheads, etc.)

Selection will be made against the following criteria:

  1. Relevance of the research to the Panel activities
  2. Advancement of Industrial Radiation Processing
  3. Originality of the research
  4. Likelihood of success
  5. Time frame for delivery of results
  6. Level of availability of results to Panel Members
  7. Level of Sponsorship benefits relating to publication of results

Applications should be sent electronically to: officers@irradiationpanel.org

Deadline for receipt – 30 June 2012

IAEA Conference on Denial and Delay

IAEA

IAEA - Vienna

The IAEA have made the issue of Denial and Delay of shipment of radioactive materials a number one priority. The International Conference on the Safe and Secure Transport of Radioactive Material: The Next Fifty Years of Transport – Creating a Safe, Secure and Sustainable Framework  took place in Vienna, Austria 17 -21 October 2011.

The transportation of cobalt-60 is vital for public health around the world; it was recognised to be a key focus for the International Steering Committee on Denial and Delay. The President’s target for making D&D a thing of the past is 2013.

IMRP 2011 Voted Great Success

IMRP2011 Plenary Session

More than 500 delegates attended the 16th International Meeting of the Radiation Processing industry in Montreal in June. The Hilton Bonaventure was a great venue for this gathering of industrialists, academics and engineers. The meeting theme was, “Where Science and Business Connect”. A great emphasis was placed upon the encouragement of student scientific delegates with a plenary session to showcase the most promissing 3 student poster presenters.  Evolving applications, development of advanced materials and the challenges faced in the sterilisation of state-of-the-art medical devices that comprise delicate bio-compatible scaffolds or slow eluting drug delivery with device hardware formed the basis of a technical programme at the cutting edge of radiation processing development. Ever prolific, food irradiation received extensive cover and reflected the growing interest in phytosanitary applications.

IMRP 2011 Gala Event

IMRP 2011 Gala Event

IMRP is more than a technical forum it is a meeting ground for academics and industrialists, engineers and researchers, novices and experts and IMRP 2011 was no disappointment. The social events that promote networking across these operational barriers were exceptional. Hearty congratulations are due to the Organising Committee and Programme Committee alike.

IAEA Working Group on Denial and Delay

In January the Chair of the Irradiation Panel, Cathie Deeley, attended a working group meeting at the IAEA in Vienna. This was organised by Jim Stewart, Head of the IAEA Transport Safety Unit, to produce an information sheet that will be used to introduce carriers, port authorities and national and regional regulators to the importance of radioactive materials in our everyday lives. This was written by a committee who represented a range of stake holders: Radiation Source Manufacturers; Radiation Processing; Nuclear Power ; Health Care and Hi-tech Electronics Industries. The information sheet will be used in support of existing IAEA materials including an extensive suite of training modules soon to be available from the IAEA website.
