This document presents feedback from the Panel on Gamma and Electron Irradiation on the EU legal framework for food irradiation in 2017. It highlights how the Directives are outdated, restrictive, and inconsistent with international scientific consensus and regulatory practice. Key issues include an incomplete list of approved foods, outdated technology provisions, impractical dose specifications, and labelling requirements that inhibit adoption. The Panel recommends that future revisions address these shortcomings to better support safe, effective, and internationally aligned food irradiation practices.
